India shipped 12.55 lakh tonnes of buffalo meat worth $4.06 billion in FY2024-25 — the second-biggest line in APEDA's entire export basket, behind only basmati rice (APEDA). Buffalo meat export data gets specific fast: Egypt took $602 million, Vietnam $595 million, Malaysia $571 million of frozen boneless carabeef in 2024, logged shipment by shipment (World Bank WITS). The totals look settled. The lane-level records don't — Iraq nearly doubled in a year, the UAE rose 37%, and the Philippines reopened in early 2026 (Tradologie).
Most Indian plants still sell through the same Gulf and Ho Chi Minh City brokers they signed a decade ago. The exporters compounding fastest work in reverse: rank the importers by tonnage, confirm their plant is approved for that market, quote the top of the list direct.
The 30-second version
- FY2024-25: 12.55 lakh tonnes, $4.06 billion — ₹34,392 crore, up about 11% on the year (APEDA, Kashmir Life).
- Egypt was the #1 buyer by value in 2024 at $602.4 million; Vietnam led volume in FY2024-25 with 2.18 lakh tonnes (WITS).
- Indian frozen carabeef quoted $3,860/MT FOB in November 2025, up 21% year on year — still 30-50% below Brazilian, Australian and US beef (APEDA-Crisil dashboard).
- Only boneless frozen buffalo meat may leave India — under HS 020230, sourced from APEDA-registered plants.
- USDA pegs India's 2026 bovine meat exports at 1.55 million tonnes, a fresh high (USDA FAS).
What does buffalo meat export data show for 2026?
A trade grinding higher on volume and price at once. FY2024-25 closed at $4.06 billion and 12,54,775 tonnes, with buffalo meat supplying over 79% of India's animal-product exports (APEDA). In rupee terms the line grew from ₹31,010 crore to ₹34,392 crore, and India ranked third globally by volume in buffalo meat, fifth by value (Kashmir Life). Across all bovine meat, India holds roughly a 12% share of world exports — third behind Brazil (24%) and Australia (13%) (APEDA-Crisil dashboard).
FY2025-26 opened faster still: buffalo meat, dairy and poultry shipments together rose about 20% to $2.17 billion in April-August (IREF). New Delhi noticed. From 29 October 2025, every tonne of frozen buffalo meat exported pays ₹250 into a new Meat Export Development Fund run under APEDA, earmarked for market access and value addition — a signal the government now treats carabeef as a strategic export, not a byproduct trade.
Which country imports the most buffalo meat from India?
Egypt was the top buyer of Indian buffalo meat by value in 2024 — $602.4 million for 190,905 tonnes — a whisker ahead of Vietnam ($594.9M) and Malaysia ($570.6M), per World Bank WITS. By volume, Vietnam still led FY2024-25 with 2.18 lakh tonnes. The full 2024 ranking under HS 020230:
- Egypt: $602.4 million (190,905 t)
- Vietnam: $594.9 million (179,720 t)
- Malaysia: $570.6 million (175,188 t)
- Iraq: $374.3 million (126,853 t)
- Saudi Arabia: $259.3 million (72,493 t)
- UAE: $228.8 million (78,385 t)
- Indonesia: $206.2 million (63,275 t)
- Philippines: $108.9 million (34,269 t)
The movement matters more than the ranks. Iraq grew 99.5% year on year to cross $740 million in import value, the UAE rose 37%, Egypt 23%, Malaysia a steady 10% — and Uzbekistan, from a tiny base, jumped 273% (Tradologie). The Philippines lifted its import bans in early 2026, reopening a $109 million lane for manufacturing-grade meat. Vietnam eased fractionally, but stays the region's clearing house: a large share of what lands in Haiphong moves onward into East Asia rather than Vietnamese kitchens.
Eight countries take most of India's carabeef. Which importer inside each one is scaling — and which is fading — sits in the shipment records, not the annual totals.
Why is Indian carabeef 30-50% cheaper than Brazilian beef?
Because Indian buffalo meat is the offtake of the world's largest dairy herd, not a feedlot industry. India carried about 71 million head of cattle in 2025 — the biggest count anywhere — and Uttar Pradesh alone produces 40% of the country's bovine meat (APEDA). Spent dairy buffalo reach slaughter at a fraction of ranching cost, and the price sheet shows it:
| Origin | Frozen bovine FOB, Nov 2025 ($/MT) | YoY change |
|---|---|---|
| India | 3,860 | +21% |
| Brazil | 5,380 | +13% |
| Australia | 6,300 | +16% |
| USA | 8,300 | +1% |
Even after a 21% price climb, Indian carabeef undercuts Brazil by $1,500 a tonne and the US by more than half — the APEDA-Crisil dashboard prices India 30-50% below traditional suppliers and flags China, the UK, Japan and South Korea as the high-value markets that gap could unlock (APEDA-Crisil). The near-term outlook stays bullish: $3,870-3,920/MT forecast for the December-February quarter. For importers squeezed by record cattle prices in the Americas, that arithmetic is the whole pitch.
Vietnam, Egypt, Iraq: how the big three lanes actually behave
Vietnam is the volume valve. Trades clear fast, consignments are large, and much of the meat re-exports across the border — so exporters who work the lane say buyer identity and payment terms matter more than the destination on the bill of lading. Egypt is the value anchor: ₹5,549 crore in FY2024-25, state-influenced buying to hold retail meat prices down, and Cairo has been approving additional Indian slaughterhouses as its imports head another 6% higher (APEDA-Crisil). Iraq is the breakout — near-doubling in a year as reconstruction-era demand outruns regional supply.
The quiet opportunity is Saudi Arabia: imports from India compounding at a 20% CAGR since 2020, yet only around 20 Indian exporters are active there because plant approvals lag (APEDA-Crisil). Fewer approved sellers, growing demand: that is pricing power for whoever clears the audit next.
HS 020230: the boneless-only rule behind the trade
Buffalo meat export from India runs under one code and one hard rule. HS 020230 covers frozen boneless bovine meat — India's 8-digit line is 02023000 — and it carries roughly 93% of the country's meat exports (Credlix). Bone-in meat and carcasses are prohibited for export; only deboned, deglanded frozen buffalo meat may ship, and customs requires a declaration that every consignment came from an APEDA-registered integrated abattoir or processing plant. Search 020230 in trade records and you are effectively reading the entire carabeef trade in one query — new to the system, start with our guide to HS codes.
APEDA plants: the approved list decides who ships
India had 72 integrated abattoir-cum-meat processing plants on APEDA's approved list as of mid-2024, and close to 80 registered exporting units serving about 70 markets (APEDA, IREF). Ask any Unnao or Aligarh plant manager: the first question on a new inquiry is not price, it is "is our plant on that country's approved list?" Egypt and Saudi Arabia audit Indian abattoirs individually. An unapproved plant cannot quote, whatever its rate — which is why buffalo meat export data is read plant by plant, not just company by company.
Seventy-two plants, seventy markets, four billion dollars. The bottleneck in carabeef is not demand — it is which plant holds which country's approval.
How ShipScout turns buffalo meat export data into a buyer list
ShipScout is a global trade-intelligence platform — 11 billion-plus shipment records across 240+ countries, built as an affordable alternative to Panjiva and ImportGenius. It helps Indian meat exporters find and vet buyers with data-backed targeting, working from mirrored licensed trade data for India-linked trade. The carabeef workflow:
- Search HS 020230. See which importers are receiving frozen boneless buffalo meat, at what cadence and tonnage. Start in the company directory.
- Rank buyers inside one lane. A Vietnamese importer clearing reefer containers monthly outranks ten one-off buyers — sort by volume and work the top ten.
- Vet before extending credit. Meat moves on 30-45 day terms in the Gulf; confirm real shipment history first — here's how to verify an international partner before paying.
- Reach the decision-maker. Contact intelligence (where available) beats the info@ inbox; the broader playbook is in finding buyers for export from India and the food & agro buyer guide.
Open the first email with the buyer's own numbers: monthly tonnage, current origin, landed month. Replies change when an importer realises you can see their purchasing.
