Egg Export from India 2026: Buyers, US Lane, HS Codes

In March 2025, eggs left India for the United States for the first time ever — roughly 3 million of them, cleared because bird flu had wiped out American supply (APEDA market dashboard). By mid-year a single consignment of 1 crore eggs in 21 refrigerated containers had sailed from Thoothukudi (Deccan Herald). That is the new face of egg export from India: a $168.77 million poultry trade in FY2024-25 (APEDA) that lost its biggest Gulf lane and found a richer one across the Pacific inside twelve months. The winners could see, in shipment data, which buyers were still moving.

Here is who buys Indian eggs, what changed in 2025-26, and how to work the buyer list instead of waiting on a broker's call from Muscat.

The 30-second version

  • India's poultry product exports reached $168.77 million in FY2024-25; top destinations were Oman, UAE, Maldives, Indonesia and Vietnam (APEDA).
  • Oman is the #1 buyer of Indian shell eggs — $44.4 million and 25,088 tonnes in 2023, near half the $96.4M trade (World Bank WITS) — but it froze new import permits, and volumes collapsed from 11.4 crore to 2.6 crore eggs (News9).
  • US bird flu hit 173 million birds and pushed retail eggs to a record $6.23/dozen in March 2025 (CRS, USDA) — opening the door Namakkal walked through.
  • Shell eggs ship under HS 040721; dried egg yolk under HS 040811.
  • Roughly 95% of India's table-egg exports come out of the Namakkal belt in Tamil Nadu.

What does egg export from India look like in 2026?

Bigger, and pointed in a new direction. APEDA counted $168.77 million of poultry product exports in FY2024-25, with buyer countries expanding from 43 to 50 and growth in every major lane: Oman up 61.61%, UAE up 94.17%, Maldives up 32.10%, Indonesia up 20.44% (APEDA via Big News Network). Supply is not the constraint. India is the world's second-largest egg producer at 142.77 billion eggs in 2023-24 (APEDA), heading for about 147.5 billion in 2025, with rock-bottom production costs and a deep exportable surplus.

The trade is tiny against that base — which is why exporters can watch it shipment by shipment. Over the twelve months to September 2024, India moved 7,980 egg consignments through just 104 exporting companies to 614 buyers (ExportImportData). Six hundred-odd buyers is not an ocean. It is a list you can actually read.

Which country imports the most eggs from India?

Oman imports the most eggs from India — $44.4 million and 25,088 tonnes in 2023, close to half of India's $96.4 million shell-egg exports, per World Bank WITS. Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Qatar and the UAE follow. The top buyers by value:

  1. Oman: $44.4 million (25,088 t)
  2. Sri Lanka: $14.2 million (9,889 t)
  3. Maldives: $13.1 million (10,914 t)
  4. Qatar: $9.8 million (7,901 t)
  5. UAE: $9.0 million (6,207 t)
  6. Kuwait: $1.4 million

The pattern is short sea lanes: a container from Thoothukudi or Chennai reaches Muscat, Malé or Colombo before the eggs age out of Grade A. That geography built the trade — and concentrated its risk in one Gulf capital.

Half of India's egg trade rode on one Gulf permit. When Oman paused it, the map redrew itself inside a year — and the exporters who coped already knew their second and third buyers by name.

Egg export to USA: the door bird flu opened in 2025

The United States lost 173 million birds to highly pathogenic avian influenza across 1,704 flocks between February 2022 and May 2025 (Congressional Research Service). Retail eggs hit an all-time record $6.23 per dozen in March 2025 before easing to $4.55 by May (USDA). Washington went looking for foreign eggs, and for the first time it looked at India.

The first egg export to USA cleared in March 2025 at about 3 million eggs; APEDA's market intelligence cell projects the lane can scale to 50–100 containers a month (APEDA dashboard). The landmark 1-crore consignment that followed shows the bar: every egg 60 grams minimum, Grade A/A+, from flocks with a certified no-HPAI history, moved in temperature-controlled containers through VOC Port (DT Next). US realisations beat Gulf prices, so Namakkal packers now sort their best eggs for America and send the rest down the old lanes. If the US is on your roadmap, start with how to export to the USA from India — FDA registration and compliance are the real work.

Oman, Qatar and egg export to Dubai: the Gulf reshuffle

While America opened, the Gulf tightened. Oman stopped issuing new import permits for Indian table eggs on biosecurity grounds after bird-flu outbreaks in India; Qatar added weight restrictions and paused permits of its own. Namakkal's shipments to Oman crashed from 11.4 crore eggs to 2.6 crore, with one ₹15 crore consignment stuck at Sohar port mid-transit (News9). The egg export to Dubai lane held up better — UAE purchases nearly doubled in FY2024-25 — and Dubai's re-export machine quietly absorbs volume the smaller Gulf states stop taking directly.

The diversification push is visible in the data: India is targeting Gambia, Nigeria and the US, where realisations run higher. African egg imports are compounding fast — Uganda up 57% CAGR, Nigeria up 63% over 2020-24 — and Indian eggs at about $600 a tonne undercut Turkish supply at $670 (APEDA dashboard). Not every door opened: the 2025 India-UK FTA kept egg tariffs, and Vietnam capped 2025 imports at a token 72,104 dozen. Lane risk now defines this trade.

An egg is a 21-day product moving on 7-day permits. The exporters who sleep well are the ones with three live buyer relationships per container, not one.

Egg HS codes: 040721 for shell eggs, 040811 for yolk powder

Fresh table eggs of hens ship under HS 040721. Fertilised hatching eggs travel separately under HS 040711, other birds' fresh eggs under 040729, and preserved or cooked eggs under 040790 (ExportImportData). Out of the shell, the codes jump chapters within 04: HS 040811 covers dried egg yolks, and 040891 dried whole-egg powder — the processed trade where firms around Erode earn bakery- and pharma-grade premiums without shell-egg cold-chain drama.

Search only 040721 and you miss the powder buyers; search "eggs" as text and you drown in chocolate-egg noise. Query all the codes, then filter by product description. New to the system? Start with what an HS code is and how to use it.

Namakkal: the cluster behind egg export from India

One Tamil Nadu district ships almost the whole trade. The Namakkal belt produces crores of eggs a day, anchors Tamil Nadu's 15.64% share of national egg production (APEDA), and accounts for roughly 95% of India's table-egg exports (News9). Layer farms, feed mills, graders and container yards sit within an hour of each other, with Thoothukudi and Chennai close enough to keep eggs fresh to the vessel.

Talk to a Namakkal packer and the routine is mechanical: check the NECC daily rate at dawn, net it against export parity for Muscat or Malé, and commit containers only where the spread clears freight and grading losses. What changed in 2025-26 is the third screen — who else is buying. When Oman froze and the US opened inside six months, watching buyer-level shipment data stopped being analytics and became survival.
