India sent more than 1 lakh tractors (100,000-plus) overseas in 2025 for the first time since 2022, and its biggest single customer paid US$244.48 million for the privilege. That is what the United States imported from India in the 2025 calendar year (UN COMTRADE), and it anchors a tractor export from India story that has swung from slump to record inside eighteen months. India already builds more tractors than any other country on earth. In FY2025-26 it also shipped past the 100,000-unit export mark that weak global demand had blocked for three straight years (IBEF).

A record on the shipping manifest is not a record in your order book. The US still takes 21% of every tractor India exports, yet American shipments fell 40% in 2023-24 and another 10% in 2024-25 — the momentum has moved to Europe, Brazil and South Asia (ICCT via Autocar Professional). Exporters winning those lanes read each destination's import records shipment by shipment.

The 30-second version

  • Tractor export from India crossed 1 lakh units in 2025 for the first time since 2022: 95,191 shipped in Jan-Nov alone (up 6%), the segment worth about $1.13 billion in 2024 (IBEF, WTEx).
  • The United States is the #1 buyer at $244.48M (2025) and 21% of volume — but its demand is shrinking, while the EU ($181M, +11% CAGR) and Brazil ($88M, +65% CAGR) compound fast (COMTRADE, ICCT).
  • Sonalika is India's largest tractor exporter (26.9% of April 2026 exports); Mahindra is the biggest maker overall, and John Deere's India exports jumped 185% year on year in April 2026 (Agro Spectrum).
  • Indian tractors now reach 162 countries, opened up by aligning to global emission norms under TREM IV (ICCT).
  • Tractors ship under HS 8701; India's mass-market farm tractors (30-50 HP) fall mainly in 870192 and 870193.

What does the latest tractor export from India data show?

Tractor export from India hit a record in 2025: 95,191 units shipped between January and November, up 6% year on year, pushing full-year volume past 100,000 units for the first time since 2022, with the segment worth roughly $1.13 billion in 2024. India ranked as the world's 17th-largest tractor exporter and ran a trade surplus of about $1.1 billion in the category (WTEx, IBEF).

The base under that number is enormous. India's wholesale tractor dispatches crossed 11.6 lakh units (about 1.16 million) in FY2025-26, up 23.47%, and retail sales topped 10 lakh units in a single year for the first time (Autocar Professional). Roughly 15% of that output heads abroad. For Indian tractor exporters the constraint was never the factory; it was placing the machine abroad before it came off the line.

From 2022 peak to 2026 rebound: the tractor export from India trend

Volumes peaked at about 1.31 lakh units in 2022, then corrected hard as Africa, Turkey and the US pulled back under currency and inflation pressure — exports sat below 1 lakh through 2023 and 2024 (Statista, IBEF). FY2025-26 is the turn. Monthly tractor export data shows it plainly: 9,675 units in April 2026 (up 30.4%) and 9,971 units in June (up 13.7%), even after a softer 9,275-unit March (Agro Spectrum, Apr, Jun).

Between FY2019 and FY2025, export volumes grew at a muted 1.2% CAGR while export values compounded at 11.9%, proof the mix is shifting to higher-horsepower, higher-value machines (Thurro). Read that gap as a pricing signal: buyers who took 40 HP units two seasons ago now specify 50-75 HP, and whoever catches the upgrade in the shipment record quotes the right model first.

Which countries buy the most tractors from India?

The United States is the largest buyer of Indian tractors at $244.48 million in 2025 and 21% of export volume, followed by the European Union ($181 million) and Brazil ($88 million), with Bangladesh, South Africa and Thailand anchoring fast-growing South-Asian and African demand. The US lead is narrowing: its intake fell 40% in 2023-24 and 10% more in 2024-25, while the EU and Brazil compound at 11% and 65% a year (ICCT).

Each lane wants a different tractor. The US and EU buy compliant, higher-HP machines against tight emission rules; Brazil is a value play that exploded from near-zero in 2017-18; the South-Asian and African markets (Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Africa) run on affordable 30-50 HP units, many bought with no emission standard at all (ICCT). Read the buyer list before you quote: the Iowa dealer and the Dhaka importer are not the same conversation.

One market takes a fifth of every tractor India ships — and it is buying less each year. Concentration like that is the reason to open the next lane's import records now, not after the reorders stop.

Who are the top Indian tractor exporters?

Five names carry most of the tonnage, and the export table looks nothing like the home-market one: Sonalika, a mid-tier brand at home, leads exports, while Mahindra dominates domestically but sits second abroad. The current top tier:

Tractor export HS codes: 8701 explained

Tractors export under HS heading 8701 — "tractors other than tractors of heading 8709" (Flexport, Credlix). The right subheading turns on engine power, and that matters because India's mass-market machines sit in a narrow band:

Most Indian farm tractors are 30-50 HP, so 8701 92 and 8701 93 carry the bulk. Search one subcode and you miss half the buyers. New to codes? Start with our guide to what an HS code is and how to use it, then run the whole 8701 family together.

How emission standards opened Europe and Brazil

The reason Brazil and the EU compound at double digits is regulatory. As India aligned domestic norms to TREM IV (its tractor emission Stage IV rules), machines built to spec cleared the emission and safety gates of premium markets. The effect was dramatic: medium-category exports to Belgium jumped 200-fold in a single year after TREM IV (ICCT).

The value curve proves it. India's tractor exports to the EU grew from $38 million in 2008-09 to $181 million in 2024-25 (11% CAGR), while Brazil ran from $4.5 million in 2017-18 to $88 million, a 65% CAGR (ICCT). Meanwhile no-standard markets like Bangladesh, Mexico and South Africa kept buying India's low-HP units, so the export book widened at both ends.

Meeting a buyer's emission standard is what turns a one-off order into a lane. The next Indian tractor export surge will be written in horsepower bands, not just headline units.

How to find tractor buyers with tractor export data

ShipScout is a global trade-intelligence platform — 11 billion-plus shipment records across 240+ countries, an affordable alternative to Panjiva, ImportGenius and Volza. For Indian tractor exporters it maps demand from destination markets' own import records (public for the US, EU and Brazil) and from mirrored licensed trade data. The workflow:

One habit that converts a tractor enquiry: pull a target importer's last two quarters of receipts and open with the specifics: HP band, unit count, month, the origin they buy from now. A dealer who sees you already know their supply book reads the second paragraph. India already makes more tractors than anyone, and 2025-26 proved the world will buy them.
